e-LKM and e-LMM systems in Malaysia

Technology advancement has overwhelmed every field of life: people and working cultures going towards digitalization. The service sector of any country uses technology to save time and make sustainable and easy ways to provide services.

 Keeping in view the reliability of technology the Malaysian transport authority digitalizes the vehicle and driving license by introducing e-LKM and e-LMM systems to help their citizen to provide the most convenient way to get their licenses for their vehicles. In this regard, the transport agency improvised the system of e-LKM, and e-LMM to facilitate their citizen.

The online renewals facility is a part of the ministry’s digitalization plans, which began on February 10, 2024, last year with the roll-out of the digital licenses and road-tax system, to save time and cost for road users and the government.

(No more physical tax stickers or driving licenses)

What is e-LKM and e-LMM? 

 These two different methods are regulated by the Malaysian transport authority to get the license of the vehicle and a driving license as well.

e-LKM 

It stands for an e-vehicle license, a sign of official vehicle registration. It can be replaced by the tax stickers. 

e-LMM

It stands for e-driving licence which is replaced by the physical driving licence and it is acceptable by the transport authority.

  •  According to the official Malaysian transport authority during the first month 30,000 users registered for the myJPJ app. And last year during 2023, more than 100,000 (e-LKM, e-LMM) licences linked with the app.
e-LMM

Legal enforcement for the e-LKM, e-LMM

 Renewing both licenses can be done online, saving time and effort compared to visiting physical JPJ counters. Before this digital system, you go to the JPJ offices and face many difficulties in registering your vehicle or driving license. And it is a very time-consuming process.

Security: 

Both licenses are secured with digital signatures and encryption, making them tamper-proof and reducing the risk of fraud this advanced system overcomes the illegal actions that are done by the frauds, etc. It is more secure than the ordinary ways. 

Environmentally friendly:

 By eliminating the need for physical licenses, e-LKM and e-LMM contribute to a greener environment by reducing paper waste. There is no need for paper or any kind of paper substance to print it out.

Budget-friendly

It reduces the cost of paper that is used to print these licenses. And a lot of costs incurred to them. The digital method reduces these costs and it is budget-friendly for the authority. The authority also added that this move could save RM96 million a year that was previously used for printing of road tax and driving licenses. 

Registration process step by step  

After the official announcement of the legal body people are moving towards this digital system. If you want to register yourself for this here are some steps for that. It is so easy to register. Let us have a look at these steps.

 To encourage the adoption of the digital driving license, JPJ will be offering an RM5 rebate for those who choose to renew their driving license digitally (e-LMM) from February 1, 2024, until the end of the year.

The offer is only valid for Malaysian citizens renewing digitally via JPJ counters, the mySIKAP portal, the MyJPJ app, or a JPJ partner (Pos Malaysia outlets and MyEG). 

Here’s how you can register for e-LKM and e-LMM:

Requirements:

  • You must be a Malaysian citizen with a valid Malaysian driving license.
  • You must own a vehicle registered in Malaysia.
  • You need a smartphone with the MyJPJ app installed or access to a computer with an internet connection.

Instructions:

Download the MyJPJ app:

  • Available for free on Android and iOS app stores.

Create an account or log in:

  • If you’re a new user, create an account using your MyKad details.
  • Existing users can log in using their username and password.

Register for e-LKM:

  • Select “Kenderaan” from the main menu.
  • Choose “Maklumat Kenderaan”.
  • Select the vehicle you want to register e-LKM for.
  • Click “Mohon e-LKM”.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to make the payment (online banking or debit/credit card).
  • Once processed, your e-LKM will be available in the app.

Register for e-LMM:

  • Select “Lesen” from the main menu.
  • Choose “Maklumat Lesen Memandu”.
  • Click “Mohon e-LMM”.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to make the payment (online banking or debit/credit card).
  • If eligible, you’ll receive an RM5 rebate during processing.
  • Once processed, your e-LMM will be available in the app.

Alternatively, you can register through the JPJ online portal:

  • Visit JPJ.
  • Log in using your MyKad details.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to register for e-LKM and e-LMM.

Problems regarding e-LKM, e-LMM 

No, doubt it is the advanced system to regulate roads and transportation. But in the beginning, there are some problems faced by the users. Which makes it negligent to adopt this digital system.

Limited awareness: 

Some people may not be aware of the existence of e-LKM and e-LMM, or they may be hesitant to switch from physical licenses due to unfamiliarity with the technology.

Technical issues:

 Occasionally, users may encounter technical issues with the MyJPJ app or the online portal, which can hinder their ability to access or renew their licenses.

Not accepted everywhere:

 While e-LKM and e-LMM are generally accepted by law enforcement officers, there may be rare instances where physical licenses are still required.
